You know there's a ton of opportunity on LinkedIn, and you see your competitors crushing it, but you aren't sure where to start. "We're stuck in an expensive knife-fight over keywords." You're writing "keyword-driven" content that isn't converting, but you aren't sure how to run a different strategy. "We've wasted too much money on content that never delivered." Your CEO's been burned by multiple failed content programs that ran through budgets and delivered mediocre results. "Right now, our content could have anyone's logo on it." You're starving for differentiation in a crowded market, but don't know what change to make. "The Reeder has been transformational to our content strategy. For years everyone in B2BMarketing said that content had to be better, but no one actually knew what to do about it. Devin created a new content playbook for all go to market leaders to use in a practical and effective way. Now we have strategic plans for content that buyers actually want to read and (drumroll please....) converts!" April Crichlow CMO at Centrical You know content should drive business growth but your old playbook is broken. How can you do 5% marketing and expect 100% goal attainment? You're fighting for scraps in the 5% of buyers actively searching, while billion-dollar companies capture mindshare in the 95% who aren't in-market yet. When someone decides "it's time for a CRM," they don't Google. They instantly recall 2-3 brands. That's your consideration list--and if you're not on it, you've already lost. So how can you do 5% marketing and expect 100% goal attainment? Let's keep it real: * Your team is built like it's 2015 * Your marketing spend is locked into legacy programs * Your CEO is skeptical after being burned by multiple failed content initiatives And content "experts" are drooling over attribution modeling and AI tools. But what about the fact that you're not even making buyers' consideration lists while competitors crush it on LinkedIn? Winning isn't about volume -- it's about building recall. Buyers instantly recall your brand the moment they're ready to buy. Your CEO's LinkedIn amplifies your webinars, which reinforces email campaigns, which drives research -- all laddering up to a clear POV that gets you on every consideration list. Companies like Gong and Clari didn't just increase traffic. They achieved instant recall, dominated categories, and built narratives that drove billion-dollar valuations. You have the pieces. You just need the system to deploy them strategically. Book a call with Devin Arrow icon "It's been an absolute pleasure collaborating with Devin on our content strategy. After solidifying our approach, we successfully launched three impactful playbooks focused on LinkedIn thought leadership, online events, and a brand-new newsletter - all with fantastic results. Devin's expertise and creativity truly stand out. Highly recommend!" Yair Lehrer VP of Marketing 3 Reasons You're Stuck in The 5% Your team is built like it's 2015 Blog writers focused on keywords, SEO specialists chasing rankings, social media managers posting for engagement. They're talented people trapped in outdated roles that made sense when fighting for search scraps was a viable strategy. Your marketing spend is locked in legacy programs Thousands per month on SEO tools that track yesterday's metrics, content management systems built for volume over impact, and agencies that promise "more". You're choosing to play it safe (even if you don't want to) "At least we can track blog traffic" becomes the rallying cry, even when those metrics don't connect to pipeline or growth. Your CEO has been burned by previous content initiatives, so leadership defaults to "familiar, therefore safe" even though it's not moving the business forward. "Working with Devin has not only led to powerful improvements in our content, but it has also significantly boosted our outcomes. Last quarter we saw a 54% increase in day-of-launch views for our quarterly flagship content." Emily Regenold Head of Content This is The 95-5 Content System It's the same content system I built for Gong and Clari. Here's how it works: Phase 1: We audit your content and design your system Uncover what's truly broken, what to do about it, and how to do it. First, we audit your current content programs, KPIs, channels, formats, and distribution to identify exactly what's working, what's failing, and why. Then we design your complete 95-5 content system -- including your point of view, content blueprint, and channel-specific playbooks -- so you have a systematic approach that creates the highest possibility of hitting your business goals rather than just creating more content. Phase 2: We start the engine and oversee the deployment It's all about installing the infrastructure. After building your system, we'll oversee the migration from deck to deployment, ensuring your team implements the new approach (rather than letting it collect dust in Google Drive). I provide hands-on feedback on content creation and execution, and advise roles & responsibilities, tools, and tracking needed for systematic operation. Then we optimize what's working and stress-test everything for scale -- so this becomes your new way of operating without anxiety, tribal knowledge dependencies, or constant firefighting. Phase 3: We help you place strategic, creative bets Time to scale without breaking what you built. Once your system is running consistently, we identify and execute strategic content investments in specific channels, formats, and mediums that will drive continued business growth and help you hit bigger goals -- so you can scale your content advantage without breaking what you built. Book a call with Devin Arrow icon "Devin's had a huge impact on my marketing team in such a short time. He changed how wethink about content to help us stand out in a crowded market." Mark Huber VP of Marketing What does an engagement look like? We meet weekly for strategy calls and monthly for optimization reviews Communication over Slack and detailed Loom walkthroughs Track everything with clear milestones and systematic documentation Ongoing monthly execution support to ensure consistent implementation Frequently Asked Questions What do I get at the end of the program? You get a content system your team can execute and maintain. This includes complete strategy documentation, systematic playbooks with clear ownership, reliable performance tracking, and written procedures for common scenarios. Most importantly, you'll have the confidence to walk into any board meeting and explain exactly what your company believes and why your content is building toward category dominance. Everything is designed for your team to run independently--no ongoing dependency on me. What kind of companies are a good fit for this program? B2B tech companies (Series A-C) where content complexity has outgrown scattered execution and would rather write one banger piece of content than 10 AI blogs. How long will it take to see results? You'll feel clarity within the first 30 days as we establish systematic documentation and fix immediate scattered content issues. Measurable systematic improvements typically appear by month 2-3. Full transformation--where you confidently explain your content strategy to any board member--happens around month 4-6. This isn't a quick fix; it's building systematic foundations that create category leadership. Will you manage our social media/write our blogs/run our email campaigns? No. I focus exclusively on content strategy systems--the framework, processes, and systematic documentation that make your existing content work systematically. I'm not a content agency, campaign manager, or social media specialist. Think of me as the consultant who builds your systematic foundation so your creators can produce content that compounds. I don't run the day-to-day execution. Welcome to the next episode of The Content Strategy Reeder where you'll learn how to grow your career and income with the right content strategy in less than 5 minutes. This week you're going to learn how to use audience signals to nail Content-Market Fit. But "audience signals" is a big cake to cut into on a Saturday morning (not that there's anything wrong with cake for breakfast...), so instead we're going to slice into one double-layered piece: How to use audience signals to validate your decisions and inspire new ideas. Without these insights, you're left hoping that what you're about to publish will land. With them, and you publish content with Bradly Cooper level confidence because you know it will resonate. This is the exact approach I used to scale Gong, Clari, The Reeder, and every company I advise to become THE content authority within their domain. In the next ~3 minutes you'll discover how to use these insights to inform your content strategy so you can produce highly relevant and valuable content. Plus you'll see two real-life examples of how I've used this approach to fuel my content strategy. Ready? Let's ride. Real quick, what is Content-Market Fit? Googles it. Content-Market Fit is creating the right content in the right format on the right channel for the right audience (thank you, Kevin Indig). I like that definition. Sits well. To me, Content-Market Fit is when a creator -- individual or marketing team -- has figured out exactly what their audience cares about (topics), how their audience likes to engage with it (format and style), and where they like to consume it (channel). I suppose it's like knowing your go-to order at your favorite local diner. You know exactly what you want, how you like it, and why you like it. Except in the content game, you're the diner serving up spicy content and the hungry patron is your audience. They show up, and you deliver. Benefit #1: Audience signals validate your past decisions A few months back I was writing an email campaign to promote my newest podcast episode. Using email to distribute was a bit of a test because we hadn't promoted the podcast via email yet. As we were finalizing the copy, I had a feeling the biggest objection our reader would have is the time commitment because podcast episodes were much longer than our usual CTA of tip sheets and blog posts. Add on that if ~50% of emails are opened on mobile, I knew there was a slim chance that they'd stop what they're doing and commit to 30 minutes of content on the spot. So I decided to add a final line to the email before sending it: In a single line I cut the time commitment by 90% plus upped the curiosity by promising it's a game changer. After we sent the email, I monitored the click-through rate (CTR) and saw that it was in line with our benchmark. Yesss. This justified the question, "Will people click on an email that leads them to long form audio content?". An important question for anyone who wants to scale their podcast using email as a promo channel. But I still didn't know if my PS line was helpful or if it was completely unnecessary (like a second piece of cake for breakfast that I'm definitely not eating right now). Until I saw this comment on a LinkedIn post where I was promoting the same podcast episode: It's hard to read, but that little screen grab is the PS line from above. Here's our exact ICP saying that the extra line was noticed, it worked -- and he liked it. Now that timestamp tactic lives rent free in my playbook. Money. But keep in mind, audience feedback won't always be this straight forward and obvious. So keep a sharp eye on your audience's response, like what they agree with, when they're confused, and what new topics they surface. Which brings us to... Benefit #2: Audience signals inspire new ideas It might seem like creators that have Content-Market Fit are exclusively leading their audience. But that's an illusion. The truth is, the fastest way to reach Content-Market Fit is by letting your audience lead you. Because if you make listening to your audience a habit, they'll tell you what they want -- which makes picking topics easy. Sometimes I ask my audience directly: Many of those 52 comments are people sharing why measuring success is so important to them and the challenges they face today. These are incredibly valuable insights. I used it to create a post that mentioned how I measure success to help give folks advice on how they can measure their content: This post did well and again had a healthy comment section where I got more insights. You can see how this forms a loop: Publish content -> Listen to feedback -> inspire new ideas -> publish content -> listen to feedback... TL;DR (Too Long, Devin Reed) "Social listening" has been around for a while. This is not a new concept. But the truth is very few marketers and content creators are diligent about it. If you take the time to engage with your audience, analyze their comments, and listen to their replies -- you'll quickly understand your audience better than any of your attention competitors. That's how you unlock Content-Market Fit and become THE go-to source of content for your niche. Holler at you next Saturday, Devin How to scale your content and business 1. And if you like the trailer, you'll love the show: IFRAME: https://www.youtube.com/embed/2xZitPDSzk8 I'm presenting to Clari's c-suite this coming Monday. It's not my first time, but the opportunity still comes with a quarter pound of nerves, cup of excitement, and a dash of anxiety. Par for the course when all of the company's most experienced and powerful people are in a (virtual) room watching, listening, and judging what I have to say. My palms just got a tad bit sweaty typing that. But honestly, I like the pressure. The stakes aren't March Madness levels. I don't have to "win or go home." But nailing these types of opportunities can significantly increase your credibility and notoriety within your company. Both are good for your career growth, promotions, and raises. But fall short and... well let's not spiral into a negative self talk and destructive "what ifs." As you can imagine, I've been preparing all week. Not just on what I'm going to share, but how I'm going to present it. That's often overlooked. And it prevents great marketers from getting the buy-in needed to execute the exciting, different, and often fun ideas that make marketing such a rewarding career. I'm by no means perfect but I've successfully presented my content strategy to Clari's CEO (Andy) multiple times and I've learned what works and what doesn't. So this week I'm sharing 5 tips I wish I knew earlier in my career, plus 5 mistakes to avoid when presenting to senior executives. Things that've helped me have more strategic conversations, elevate my reputation, and get buy-in to execute on my vision. Ready? Let's ride. Tip #1 - Always start with the CEO slide. Look at the top 3-5 strategic company initiatives your CEO presents (usually around this time of year) and align whatever your presenting to those things. If you're presenting your H1 plan, tie every deliverable to a strategic initiative. If you're proposing a new strategy, tie it to one of those strategic initiatives. If you're proposing a new channel, tie it to one of those strategic initiatives. You're seeing a pattern... "Starting a podcast" seems tactical until you tie it to your goal of creating and winning your category. (For example.) Don't start in marketing-land, start at the company level. Speaking of which... Tip #2 - Speak their language and avoid too much `marketing speak'. Your C-level execs don't know the importance of engagement rates, impressions, or "dark social." And candidly, they don't really care to learn either. It's not their job to be a marketing expert. It's yours. Remember that MQLs aren't on that CEO slide either. But "they are a great early indicator that shows if our programs are bringing in the right people who can buy from us." Framing matters. Meet your audience in the middle and focus on what they care about. Showing you can translate marketing lingo to real business outcomes elevates the conversation AND your credibility. Avoid too much marketing jargon or else you risk being labeled as "junior" or "too tactical." Tip #3 - Numbers don't lie. Hit 'em with real stats. This one is quick because it's simple. Data gives your ideas credibility. Back up your perspective and ideas with data wherever possible. Execs like: * QoQ growth rates * Projected results (ROI) * 3rd party research that substantiates your point of view Bring them a plan without metrics and you're asking to get scorched (I've seen it happen. It's tough to watch.) Don't make the mistake of thinking you''ll persuade on vision alone. Bring numbers. Which reminds me... Tip #4 - Share your vision, not just a check list. Andy (CEO) pushes me to "stand in the future and look backwards" -- then get the group to see what I see. Starting with tactics like webinars, blogs, etc is a guaranteed way to I like to start with a big problem statement to frame my proposal. Words like "imagine if..." are powerful for getting people to think bigger (your bigger). Tell them the potential impact of your ideas if your plan works out. Be specific. Then back into the how. Don't start with tactics. And avoid getting into the weeds (or as I say, down to the dirt) -- unless asked for specifics. Tip #5 - Don't just present. Actively encourage input. All exec want their voices heard and their fingerprints on your plan. It's kinda their job after all. So don't go in expecting all head nods, hugs, and handshakes. You won't get `em. Instead invite input. Things like: "Andy what on this slide is most interesting to you?" or "Andy what risk do you see in my plan that might've missed?" By the way, don't mistakenly think you have to agree with everything they say. You just want to show you're self-aware and capable of receiving feedback (and of course, hopefully get some good input to refine your ideas). There's a time to defend your POV and there's a time to be quiet, listen, and accept feedback. And even if you get unsolicited questions, don't get defensive. Don't expect 100% agreement. And don't get frustrated if they challenge you're thinking. TL,DR (Too Long, Devin Reed) 1. Always start with the CEO slide 2. Speak their language and avoid too much `marketing speak'. 3. Numbers don't lie. Hit 'em with real stats. 4. Share your vision, not just a check list. 5. Don't just present. Actively encourage input. When presenting to execs, think big and build excitement. Then show off your plan that's aligned, ambitious, and achievable. Holler at you next Saturday, Devin PS: It took me ~3.5 hours to write this newsletter. Welcome to the next episode of The Reeder, expert content strategy advice for growing your career and business every Saturday morning. The Reeder is sponsored by Casted I'm investing BIG on video this year for two reasons: 1. It's the best way to grow brand affinity and human connection with your audience 2. It's incredibly effective for influencing and motivating purchasing decisions Need help with your video strategy? Casted just published their Ultimate Video Marketing Guide that shows you how to make your video marketing not only clickable, but convertible, resulting in real revenue. Download your copy here for free. The creator economy has forever changed how I make money. My 6-figure side hustle, The Reeder, now has 7 revenue streams (on top of my 9-5) and I want to share how you can do the same. But let me be clear: It's not for everyone. Hell, I'm not even saying you should to do it. But if you're curious how to create more income and open doors to life-changing opportunities, below are the steps I took and decisions I made to monetize my experience, expertise, and perspective. Everything until this point has been 100% inbound and the result of curating a reputation and consistently publishing valuable content over time. Let's ride. 1st revenue stream: My full time job This is might be obvious but it's worth stating. I do have a full time job as Director, Content & Thought Leadership at Clari. And it's my first `career' priority. And I wouldn't have been able to launch my next revenue stream without all that valuable full-time experience. 2nd revenue stream: Consulting I used my experience, results, and reputation from my time at Gong to start consulting. It started four-ish years ago with people reaching out to me on LinkedIn asking to pick my brain. Being new to marketing I was shocked people wanted my advice. I was roughly one year into the role and still felt like a fraud. But after a few of these brain-picking convos, I realized that I was giving much more than I was receiving. That imbalance motivated me to start charging folks for my time because I had something of real value to offer. I started at $250/hr. After a couple months I increased it to $500. A year later $750. Now it's even more. If that seems high, I agree. But my goal is not to be affordable to everyone. My time is very valuable given I have a full time job and my family, so I price my time accordingly. Pro tip for pricing your time: Raise your price until you start hearing "no." Otherwise you're leaving money on the table. 3rd revenue stream: Newsletter ads I've always wanted to write a book. So I decided to pen a marketing playbook that reveals what I've learned and the tactics behind my audience growth, content strategy, and content creation. So I decided to dedicate one hour every Sunday to chip away at said book. But that didn't last long because on the third week I remember dreading going up to my office to do it. I wasn't enjoying it. But I wasn't ready to give up either. I still wanted to write, and I liked the idea of a weekly deadline to force me to write consistently. So I decided to launch a newsletter instead. I figured I could commit to publishing ~750 works every week. Then grow an audience that I could sell my book to once it was ready along the way. About four months after I first hit Publish, one of my readers unexpectedly replied asking to sponsor my newsletter. I (excitedly) said yes and once that first ad went live, more inbound offers poured in. Now I earn ~$1,500 every week to write and I have a healthy email list of 12.5k. Pro tip: The most valuable asset is an email list. If you don't have one, start now. There's unlimited upside and it's not too late. 4th revenue stream: LinkedIn course sales By now it's 2021 and my reputation and audience growth is gaining real momentum. I was Head of Content at Gong which was doing incredibly well, I had My friend Chris from John Barrows Sales (now at Sell Better) approached me to produce a full-length video course for sales pros who wanted to grow their LinkedIn presence. They'd cover all production costs, we'd split revenue, and cross promote to grow our audiences. It was a no-brainer because I knew I could provide tons of value by sharing my LinkedIn content strategy. Here's the course if interested. I priced it at $97 and sold a few hundred licenses, making 5-figures semi-passively. And the best part is that I get dozens of messages from happy students who took the course and loved it. Pro tips for producing an information product: 1. Launch it after you have an audience. You don't need a huge audience but you don't want to launch a product into the void. 2. Any format works -- video, written guide, etc. Start with your most valuable skill that would have the biggest impact on your audience. 3. Pick something you're confident in and could teach rather easily without los of prep. 5th revenue stream: Sponsored LinkedIn posts I stumbled into this one. One day I got a reply to my newsletter asking if I also sell LinkedIn posts. I hadn't really thought about it. I said yes and threw out the price of $500. They didn't hesitate. Then I started advertising this offer in my newsletter and raised my price every couple deals as my audience grew. I went from $500 -> $750 ->$1,000. Now I charge much more and only make it available to larger brand deals (more on that in the future). Pro tip for getting started: If you don't have a lot of name recognition yet, go outbound to brands that align with your audience and values to pitch being an influencer for them. They have budget and you'd be surprised how open they are to saying yes. 6th revenue stream: Speaking gigs I'll keep this quick because historically I haven't advertised them much, but I do a handful every year and plan to do a lot more this year. It's a fun way to make a few grand, and I evaluate offers based on who's asking, the audience demographic, size, required prep, and their budget. Pro tip for pricing: Charge more than you think you should. After a handful of these, I realized I spend A LOT more time than anticipated. They're fun but the ROI can quickly slip if you're not careful. 7th revenue stream: Ebook Sales Remember that book I always wanted to write? I finally did it. I took inventory of all my newsletters, then revised, repackaged, and redesigned it to be the most valuable resource I've ever produced. I priced Content That Converts at $149 because the skill I teach -- earning attention with your content and converting it into business growth and income -- is the most valuable skill right now for any marketer, seller, creator or entrepreneur. And I love the messages I get from folks saying how it doubled their social engagement, helped them overcome self doubt, and accelerated the results. I also really like the daily Stripe notifications because it's how I'm funding my next (and biggest) project to date... 8th revenue stream: coming soon... I can't share what it is quite yet. But I will soon. I promise. But I can share that I'm launching a new channel and already monetizing not already because I'm announcing it there first in early Feb. Final thoughts to get you started (and prevent feeling like you're behind) Could I have done all this faster. Probably. I admit, I think about that sometimes. Especially when I see other people sharing their success on social media. The comparison is unhealthy but it happens occasionally. But I didn't want to do it faster. I didn't want to rush. Keeping my 9-5 gave me the safety new to build at a steady pace and avoid operating from a place of anxiety or desperation. (Sometimes having your back against the wall is a good thing and produces great results, but it's not healthy or productive being in that state for a long time.) Also, I was growing my family. I have two daughters -- I prioritize them and my wife over making as much money as fast as possible. Time and focus has become my most valuable resources and it's not even close. My best advice: be intentional and find your own pace. Holler at you next Saturday, Devin Turn your content income sales in 30 days (or less) Content That Converts is a 154-page digital playbook -- packed with tips, techniques, and examples -- that reveals exactly how to pierce through the noise, grow your, audience, and get more clients You can purchase your copy here. Thank you in advance and hope to see you there! PS: I dropped the trailer to Reed Between The Lines this week... IFRAME: https://www.youtube.com/embed/2xZitPDSzk8 B2B content strategy is possibly my all time favorite marketing topic. As a 2x Head of Content and an advisor to multiple start ups, I've designed, created, and executed multiple content strategies. So I've seen what works, what doesn't, and have experienced multiple ways to use content to grow the business. Because at the end of the day, that's what the best content strategies do: deliver growth. Content strategy can be a complex, nuanced challenge. But it doesn't have to be. It's really more about decision-making and structuring your ideas more than anything else. Today I'm going to break it down to the 5 must-haves for every B2B content strategy, plus a template you can use to capture and structure your ideas. Let's start the basics: Content strategy is your approach to using content to grow your business It's really that simple. Of course the complexity is in the details. Let's also decouple strategy and your plan: * Content strategy is decision-making. It's your What and Why. It's all about results. * Content planning is about activities. It's your How. It's all about deliverables, timelines, and owners across a quarter or year. You need both to be successful. Today we're going to focus exclusively on strategy because it's comes first chronologically, and candidly, it's much more valuable -- both for your business and your career. And despite every company producing content, very few have an intentional content strategy. And even less have it documented. There are dozens of benefits to having an effective, intentional, and cohesive content strategy: * Marketing-level: Brand awareness and affinity, audience growth, category domination, and tons of inbound. * Business-level: Qualified sales opportunities, pipeline acceleration, revenue attainment, and customer retention. * Personal-level: Reputation as a strategic thinker, higher salary, and increased job security. That's what's at stake. But it's also important to know what is NOT a content strategy, so you don't get distracted and knocked off course. This is NOT a content strategy I don't hate. When you throw shade, no one shines. But this is just bad advice from a creator bro. And the #1 mistake I see in the wild: Beware of anyone telling you to "steal"! And it's bad because it's incomplete. It's wildly oversimplified to get clicks. If you bring this to your CMO or CEO, your credibility will get shredded. I've seen it happen (second-hand, thankfully). It's really just a list of things. At best, this is a production schedule. Definitely NOT a strategy. Here's helpful way I think about the difference: If you find yourself talking about direction and results, you're strategizing. If you find yourself talking about deliverables, you're executing. (Which is fine but that's for your plan.) Now that the table's set, let's get into the 5 things your B2B content strategy must include. 1. Mission statement: What are you setting out to accomplish? This is the first slide in all my content strategy decks. Your mission statement guides everything you do. Every decision and deliverable needs to align to this mission. It should be inspiring and aspirational. You should FEEL something when you read it. My mission statement helps me * Prioritize as a leader * Defend my decisions to executives * Explain my decisions to my directs and peers Here's my mission statement for my team at Clari: Context: I am responsible for top-of-funnel and some channels -- not the entire marketing engine. So my mission aligns to (1) my responsibilities and resources within my control and (2) our marketing and business objectives. 2. Audience: Who are you targeting helping? (We aren't hunting people with our content, we're helping them.) Your audience -- your readers, listeners, viewers -- are the most important thing to consider. You gotta know who you're creating content for to avoid random acts of marketing that lead to a disjointed strategy. At Clari we have multiple personas who buy and use Clari because we're a full revenue platform. Reps to execs log in every day, so our content needs to reflect that. But I also need to prioritize. So I break it down by primary and secondary audiences (and tertiary, if needed). 3. Objectives: What impact are you going to make on the business? This is what your CEO and senior leadership really care about: impact. Content marketing is an investment, so naturally they want to see a return. It's your job to explain what that return will be. This is where you show them (and yourself!) that you know your sh*t and can talk business-level impact, not just marketing-level metrics. It's less about getting the "right" or "wrong" metrics, and more about being intentional and clear about how you're helping the business grow. (You're seeing a theme here...). It totally depends on your team structure, marketing maturity, and company goals, among other factors. If helpful, here's how I position my team's impact at Clari: 4. Content Pillars: What are you going to talk about? Content pillars are important because they provide a strategic framework for creating and distributing content that aligns with your brand, resonates with your audience, and achieves the business objectives you outlined above. You want to pick topics that are high-level and directional, not specific SEO key words. Picking -- and sticking -- to your content pillars help you ensure * Consistency * Clear messaging * Audience relevance *I can't share my slide from Clari (sorry!) but I have a slide template for you here. 5. Transformation slide: How are you going to evolve? This is the classic "from-to" slide. Most folks don't think to include this. Probably because it's not sexy, shiny marketing. But your ability to show you can evolve a function/department conveys mastery. And mastery boosts trust and reputation. (And earning power.) Pick the ~5 areas you're focusing on and show what you're going to do differently this quarter/half-year/year. Here's what mine looks like (with some redactions for confidentially): I love this slide because it's the perfect transition to go into your plan: which are the deliverables you're going to produce based on what you've covered so far. (Should we do a part two on planning deliverables? LMK). TL,DR (Too Long, Devin Reed) When building (or refreshing) your B2B content strategy, make sure to include: 1. Mission statement 2. Audience your helping 3. Objectives 4. Content Pillars 5. Transformation slide And as promised: here's a simple template to guide you. (Make a copy then go to town.) I'd love to hear how today's episode resonated with you. Let me know what you think in the poll below. If enough of you like it and want to go deeper, we can do a live session with Q/A to make sure you're confident in your approach. Start creating better content PS: Use promo REEDER for $1,000 off A few weeks ago I joined a new gym. Well, sorta. It's one of those somewhat-fancy places that call themselves a "club." It's a bit expensive, but I joined because I recently renewed my commitment to fight off dad bod, and they have a few extra amenities that made me "oooo" during the tour, including a sauna. I'm told this is a highly effective way to recover and evict toxins from my body. So now I use it after every workout. But today's story is not about why I use the sauna. It's about what I heard inside the sauna. Two days ago I grabbed the large wooden handle and opened the door. I saw a couple of the regulars. One of them I see literally every time I'm there. He's a tad older than me, stocky, rapidly balding, and (thankfully) always fully toweled. He's always chatting to various older gents about investments, real estate, and other ways "money makes money". Anyways. Another guy, silver haired and surprisingly not sweaty for having been in there for what I presume was at least a few minutes, was finishing a story. He was going on about how restaurant owners that are about to go out of business often stiff their vendors on the way out. They know they're going out of business soon, and before the guillotine swoops down and puts them out of their misery, they rack up tons of debt with their food suppliers. Because a credit system is the norm in the restaurant industry, they take advantage of this and rack up tens of thousands of dollars in credit, then poof! -- they go out of business and disappear. The vendors are left empty handed. The worst part is, so the sauna storyteller says, there is no punishment for this behavior. There are no laws (or I guess, very flimsy ones) that can hold these now failed business owners accountable. That's messed up, I think to myself, glad to have a distraction from the heat barreling through my nostrils and into my lungs. Before the balding toweled guy replied, I noticed an unusually long pause. Then he responded with a question that I've never heard anyone ask: "Do you know this from first-hand experience?" My eyebrows jumped up. "I do," he replied steadily. "I used to run a business with my brother where we bought and sold businesses, and we saw it all the time unfortunately." He continued on about how the Russian mob -- or he thinks they were Russian -- did it all the time. But I had checked out. My attention was stuck to that question. "Do you know this from first-hand experience?" I couldn't help but think about all the bullshit on LinkedIn right now And on all social media, honestly. You see it too. * The beautifully formatted graphic explaining "The CMO's 90 Day Plan" -- from a guy who's never been a CMO (or anywhere close) * "How-to build a 7-figure SEO agency" -- from someone who's been doing marketing for a whopping... 10 months * A sales guru shouting why Sales VPs should should fire all their SDRs tonight -- even though they've never run a sales team a day in their life It got me thinking, do these people really know their stuff? The truth is, I don't know. And that's the point. But I highly doubt it. How can you possibly coach people to be a CMO if you've never experienced the pressure, stress, and skill it takes to be one? Maybe you're a SEO savant, but a million dollars in ten months?? And it's easy to talk a big game about firing people without, you know, actually dealing with the emotions of telling someone that they'll no longer be getting that pay check they've come to depend. I smell BS. So my point is this: Be skeptical. Take very little information at face value. Unless you can confirm they are speaking from first-hand experience, I wouldn't believe them with a 10-foot pole. (This is also why I don't watch or listen to sports analysts who've never played at the professional level.) I won't call them out, but I know for a fact that many influencers are plagiarizing, lying, and doing anything they can to get our attention so they can monetize it. I talked about this in depth with Eddie Shleyner a few weeks ago. And here's another point too. One that'll make you an elite marketer: Look for ways to include YOUR first-hand experience in your marketing Everyone and their mom has ChatGPT now. So effectively, everyone can "be" an expert. That's why "how-to" content just ain't cuttin' it anymore. That's also why I'm moving from "how-to" content to "how-I" content. I'm injecting my real-world experience, thoughts, opinions, -isms, and all into my content. It'll help me stand out, sure. But even more so: It's how I get people who've never heard of me to know, like and trust me in seconds. Often after just reading one post. Why? Because credibility = trust. And trust is GOLD in a world where we can't tell what's real and what's not anymore. Only someone who has walked a mile in your Nike Dunks can explain what it really takes -- and equally importantly how it FEELS. That can't be faked. Not well enough to fool you at least. So look at your content, marketing, and business strategy, and ask yourself: Are you injecting your first-hand experience into it? And is it strong enough for the bald toweled man to believe you? Because if he doesn't, neither will your audience or clients. Speaking of first hand-experience... If there's one thing I'm good at in this world, it's creating compelling content. And the channels that I'm best at are LinkedIn and email. Hands down. To be more specific, I know how to use these channels to create tons of inbound opportunities from ideal prospects who already know, like and trust me. (This works so well that yesterday I had my first $40,000 day as an entrepreneur). There are specific strategies, plays, and tips rely on time and time again. They helped me * Build Gong's LinkedIn audience from 12,000 -> 200,000+ * Grow my LinkedIn audience from 5,000 -> 84,000+ * Grow Gong's brand from $20M -> $220M ARR * Scale my business into a healthy 6-figures, 100% inbound Now I've taken all these lessons put them into a digital playbook called, Content That Converts. I wrote it for people who want to create better content to build an audience, brand, and pipeline. If that's you... You can get your copy here. Register here This week, one of my clients got a new CMO. We met to get him up to speed, share the work I've been doing, and discuss the state of the marketing team. At the end, he asked what he should focus on. But the question behind the question is: How do we win? This company is in a crowded market, with up-and-comers on one side and legacy giants on the other. Carving out a niche has been tougher than expected. So here's my response to him -- with some additional context for you. We HAVE to differentiate ourselves outside of our product. We can't rely on the product alone. Even if it is superior, buyers rarely notice or care enough to switch. So, how do you stand out? You connect through marketing. Because even if our product is different from our competitors, most buyers will never see it. So we need to carve out mindshare by being different. Here's why: People crave different. They're tired of the old. They want something new. Something different. Give it to them, and they'll remember you. Do it right, and they'll buy from you, too. (Then stay with you for years because they don't just like your product, they like YOU.) Here are 5 "levers" you can pull to differentiate yourself: #1 - Your POV, which is what you believe People connect with brands that share strong, authentic beliefs. Want to change how someone acts? Introduce new or remind them of existing belief systems. That starts by sharing your beliefs. Gong built its brand on the belief that data-driven decisions outperform opinions. Shopify believes that anyone can start, run, and grow a business. Slack believes that workplace communication doesn't have to be boring or inefficient. Take a stand on something that reflects your brand's core values. #2 - Your content, which is what you say Conversations earn attention and drive action. You can * Start new conversations * Reframe current conversations * Add to existing conversations (The first two are much more powerful than the third.) Drift broke into the market by starting conversations about `conversational marketing' when no one else was talking about it. Don't just create content--create movements. Say what others aren't, and be the voice that shifts the narrative in your industry. #3 - Your tone, which is how you say it Your tone creates your brand's personality. It shapes how people feel -- and feel about you. Your tone should reflect your brand's core values and make your audience feel, not just think. My tone is intentionally bold, direct, and conversational. Wendy's tone on X is witty, sarcastic, and dry. Ryan Holiday's tone is thoughtful, reflective, and calm. There's no "right" tone. The only "wrong" tone is no tone. My advice: Find your unique voice and stick to it. It will attract new audience and keep your existing audience wanting more. #4 - Your actions, which is what you do Actions build credibility. It's easy to say things -- but doing them is much more compelling. And memorable. Do you publish a press release, or do you stage a protest at Dreamforce like ClickUp did? ClickUp's stunt grabbed attention by aligning their brand actions with their bold, disruptive messaging. Your brand's behaviors matter. Back your marketing with bold actions that reflect your message. It will catch people's attention -- and keep it -- because it's consistent with your beliefs and previous actions. (This is what it really means to be "on brand.") #5 Your design, which is what you look like Sure, it includes your logo, colors, and brand guidelines. But it's more than that. Your brand's visual identity reflects who you are. Carta's clean, buttoned-up design reflects both their high-end product and serious clientele. Fletch PM's social posts are recongizable even if you're scrolling LinkedIn at 90mph because it has a recognizable look. When you see their content, you know what to expect. That's the power of great, branded design. Invest in design that's instantly recognizable and consistent across every touchpoint. Your brand's design speaks before your words do. Make sure your visual identity reflects who you are and what your audience should expect from you. TL,DR (Too long, Devin Reed) In a crowded market, standing out isn't about having the best product--it's about showing up differently. And being memorable as a result. Beliefs, content, tone, actions, and design --they all combine to create a brand people remember. Make your marketing do more than sell--make it unforgettable. Download your copy here for free. It got to the point where I would anticipate his comment before I even hit Publish. It was 2020 and my biggest LinkedIn troll lurked in the shadows, only reemerging when I published my newest Gong Labs article, a data-driven blog series where I shared research and advice for closing more sales deals. I'd never met this guy in-person or virtually. But that didn't stop him from absolutely hammering me in the comment sections. He called me a fraud. He told me my data was bullsh*t. He said my advice was garbage and no one should listen to me. All in public for everyone to see. He basically said anything he could to crush my credibility, make me feel like an imposter, and demolish my self-confidence. And it's important to know one thing: This guy was a CEO. He was a "competitor"-- I give it air quotes because while they offered a similar product, they never competed with us in deals. I genuinely never heard of anyone actually using their software, they were essentially non-existent in our market, and if I mentioned his company right now you'd have to Google them. In short, they were a non-factor. An "ankle biter" at best. But that didn't stop the sting. He was a CEO, and he used his title and years of experience to troll me on social media every chance he got. And even though my posts got dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of positive comments from readers, I would only remember what he said. Then I'd dwell on his negative words when going to bed that night and often for days afterwards. It was torture. He pissed me off. He made me doubt myself. And for a time, he made me hate writing. I was aware of this ripple effect and knew something had to change. I refused to let this guy bully me, but I also didn't want to "clap back" at him in the comments. That'd just make me look insecure and defensive. I had to do something, but I didn't know what. So I called my friend and writer DJ Waldow for advice. And his simple 4 words changed everything: "I know it sucks, but never feed the trolls." I didn't like that answer. I pleaded my case for saying something, anything, to defend myself: But DJ, you don't get it, this guy SUCKS. He's a CEO, why is he picking on ME? What if I tell him off just ONE time? DJ's reasoning was simple: Once you reply, he wins. Because trolls aren't trying to "win" an argument -- they're goal is to bait you into replying, into being defensive, into making you discredit yourself. They just want to distract you, get under your skin, and throw you off your game. The only way to beat them is to ignore them. That might seem like wildly simple advice. But if you've ever been disrespected by someone, you know how challenging it is to turn the other cheek. So instead of replying to the Troll with all the explicit language I felt he deserved, I simply blocked him, deleted his comment, and moved on with my day. I went on publishing my research and I didn't have to think or worry about him anymore. It felt good. But as we all know, the internet has many trolls. And that has led me to this realization: If you're going to publish content on social media, you need to embrace confrontation Not everyone is going to agree with your ideas. And people on the internet will argue about pretty much anything. But that doesn't mean everyone is a troll either. In my experience there are two types of "confrontational" comments: 1. Trolling: They aim to discredit and disrespect. Do not feed them. 2. Disagreement: Someone doesn't agree or like what you said. See if there's any validity in their remarks. The challenge is folks on the internet are often... rude. For some reason they'll say things that are unnecessarily harsh though they'd probably never say it like that to your face. They're disagreeing, but not respectfully. We aren't going to solve that behavior today, so let's just accept and adapt. After publishing content on Linkedin for 5+ years now, I've had to rewire how I view and respond (not react) to dissenting views. I ask "is this person being a hater, or just has a different opinion?" That's important because it decides if I even bother responding. If they disagree -- even if worded rudely -- I push myself to try to understand their point of view. Often I learn something even if I don't fully agree. And that might expand my perspective or inspire me to discuss in future content. Both are welcome. It took me time to realize it, but disagreements in my comment section are actually a great thing. I welcome it. Because disagreements spark conversation, and conversations are great for engagement. And engagement is the name of the game on social media after all. It's kinda like the old adage "no press is bad press." I know it feels better to only see positivity in your comments, but the truth is, there's value in disagreement. I hope you never have a CEO troll or someone bashing you on social media. But the truth is, if you're publishing content online, you probably will. But that doesn't mean it's true, that you should stop publishing, or that your ideas aren't good. Just means you need a response strategy. If you remember one thing from today, let it be this: we never feed the trolls. Nehal Tenany Content Marketing Leader (Gong, Clari) The strange but true story behind growing to nearly 100,000 LinkedIn 6 years ago, LinkedIn was a waste of time for me. Now it's my #1 sales channel. But it wasn't always triple-digit likes and Docusign signatures. When I was getting started, it was awful. Generic ideas, poor writing, and despite spending HOURS creating content I'd barely get a handful of likes (one was always from my aunt in Sacramento). I've quit, came back, quit again, and wondered if LinkedIn is BS or not. Meanwhile I watched others rack up leads, speaking gigs, and visibility. Maybe you know the feeling. But instead of getting mad, I got curious. (And frankly, competitive as hell.) I stopped guessing and built a system. And it worked. His career journey is impressive and candidly abnormal. He climbed the ranks through sales and then became the Chief Storyteller at Box, which might be the coolest title ever. Now he puts his experience and expertise to good use being an advisor and mentor along with creating GTM strategies for Emergence Capital's portfolio companies. What sacrifices has he had to make? And the lessons he's learned? Because Doug's reputation precedes him as someone who knows his stuff, is a great connector, and is an even better mentor, while being wildly successful.
